Notes: Fans of Game of Thrones, take note. This is definitely the book for those waiting for the next season!

Peter McLean, my hat goes off to you sir. I thoroughly enjoyed this lovely romp through another world filled with bad-ass characters, even more bad-ass women, children with cool abilities, war, death, more death, more war, spies, queens, even a lesbian character thrown in for flavor.

I lingered over this book for five days. I am generally a fast reader, and can finish a book this size rapidly, but I just didn’t want this book to end, there was so much going on. Characters had their own agendas, the main character was all over the place trying to deal with everything that could go wrong going wrong almost as soon as he took one step forward. The poor guy couldn’t seem to catch a break, every time a situation was dealt with, another rose in it’s place.

I think my most favorite character was Bloody Anne. She was truly awesome, her back story made me cry (which is not an easy thing to do), and she’s just all around awesome. She makes me think of a medieval wonder woman set in an alternate fantasy world, she’s that cool. But then I also liked Will the Woman, Black Billy, and all of the others. Every one of them had a unique back story, and a unique talent that made them useful for the Priest.

I cannot wait for the next book. I’m adding this one to my immediate ‘must buy’ list, which has grown quite a bit throughout the summer. I’m hoping that book two will come out quickly, because this is a story that I really want to see what happens next.

5/5 stars for a glorious grimdark tale!

Until next time,
