First Chapter First Paragraph

It’s First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday  @ Bibliophile by the Sea – Share the first paragraph of a book you are reading or plan to read soon.

Onyx and Ivory by Mindee Arnett

Chapter 1: Kate

Out here, darkness meant death.
Kate Brighton urged her weary horse ever faster as night crept over the land of Rime. The gelding labored with the pace already, his pants like whipcracks in the air, and his shoulders and neck lathered with foamy white stripes. But they couldn’t stop, and they couldn’t slow down. They had to make it inside the city before the gates closed.

This is an author that I’ve read before, in her series that started with Avalon, of which made her an instant favorite author of mine. Avalon was science fiction, and Onyx and Ivory is fantasy-my favorite genre to read of all, so I am extra eager for this one. Here is the dust-jacket plot:

They call her Traitor Kate. It’s a title Kate Brighton inherited from her father after he tried to assassinate the high king of Rime. Cast out of the nobility, she now works for the royal courier service. Only the most skilled ride for the Relay and only the fastest survive, for when night falls, the nightdrakes-deadly flightless dragons-come out to hunt. Fortunately, Kate has a secret edge: She is a wilder, born with forbidden magic that allows her to influence the minds of animals.
And it’s this magic that leads her to a caravan massacred by drakes in broad daylight-the only survivor Corwin Tormane, the son of the King. Her first love, the boy she swore to forget after he condemned her father to death. With their paths once more entangled, Kate and Corwin must put the past behind them to face this new threat of drakes who attack in the daylight and the darker menace behind them.

The love interest annoys me, but aside from that this book sounds awesome! I love fantasy novels with dragons, and Mindee Arnett is one of my favorite writers of this last year, so this should be an epic book to read! I have it sitting on my nightstand, waiting impatiently for me to start reading.
Aside from Onyx and Ivory, other books that I plan on reading this week are:

Ninefox Gambit
Sky in the Deep
Caliban’s War

And several others. I have a long list of books that I really need to get to, I just haven’t had the time here lately to do so, especially as a good chunk of my time goes towards getting my own book hopefully published one of these days. Aside from that, I should be able to read Onyx and Ivory and have a review up before the end of the week, if all goes according to plan.

In the meantime,
